The short answer

Which supplements help with hair loss?

For pattern hair loss, the strongest evidence is for medicines (topical minoxidil and oral finasteride), not supplements. A few supplements, such as specific saw palmetto extracts and a studied pumpkin seed oil preparation, show limited evidence. Biotin, iron, zinc and vitamin D are worth considering mainly when a deficiency has been documented.

Key takeaways

  • Name the problem first: thinning, shedding, breakage and scalp issues need different answers.
  • Supplements are one of four kinds of help, alongside medicines, procedures and everyday care.
  • A result for a blend belongs to the blend, not to one ingredient inside it.
  • Sudden shedding, patches, pain or scarring need a professional assessment first.

Step one

What are you seeing?

Picking the outcome first keeps the evidence honest: what helps breakage says nothing about regrowth.

See a professional first if hair loss is sudden, in patches, comes with pain, marked redness or scarring, or follows a strict diet, a new medicine or pregnancy. These need their own assessment, not a supplement plan.

Supplements, honestly

Sometimes the right number of supplements is zero.

Correcting a documented deficiency can matter. Supplementing when you're well nourished is a separate question, with separate and usually thinner evidence. Your plan keeps them apart.

Good questions

Hair questions, answered.

Still wondering about something?
Read how we work

Can the hair check tell me why I'm losing hair?

No. It helps you describe what you're seeing and what has already been assessed. Identifying the cause is a clinical job, and some patterns, like sudden shedding or patches, should be seen by a professional first.

Why do medicines appear on a supplement site?

Because for pattern hair loss the strongest evidence is for medicines. Hiding them would make supplements look better than they are. Everything is labelled so you can compare like with like.

Will you tell me to take biotin?

Not by default. Biotin, iron, zinc and vitamin D become relevant when a deficiency is documented. High-dose biotin can also interfere with some lab tests, which is part of every profile.

Is rosemary oil as good as minoxidil?

The evidence for a studied rosemary lotion is limited and doesn't show equivalence. We show it to people who look for botanicals, with the exact preparation studied, never as a DIY essential-oil recipe.
